English coaches from Cricket Without Boundaries (CWB) left the country on Sunday impressed with the budding talent in Uganda.

The nine coaches traversed schools in eastern and western Uganda over 16 days, imparting young players with basics of the game. “We have been impressed by the talent in Uganda especially in Fort Portal,” CWB project leader Scott Keown said at a farewell ceremony for the coaches on Saturday. “Everywhere we went, we were appreciated and the kids were eager to learn,” he added.

“If the association keeps taking the game to the grassroots, the future in Uganda is very bright.”

The coaches concluded their tour with a six-wicket triumph over a local select side, the Abagurusi XI at Lugogo Oval on Saturday.

Paul Kaheru (48), Steven Luswata (22) and Jeremy Kibuukamusoke (22) helped Abagurusi score 159 runs.

Allan Ssematimba (2/17 in 3) and CWB’s Keown (1/24 in 4) halted the Ugandans’ rhythm before opening batsman Mark Herring (40 off 33), John Trust Mayeku (45) and classy veteran Richard Davies (29 off 20), chased the target with utmost ease.
CWB reached the finishing line with 12 balls and six wickets still in hand. Tom Rich (0/15 in 2), Michael Reeves (0/8 in 2) and Parry Moore (0/33 in 5) contributed to CWB’s win.
